Past

Ever since I was little, I always wanted to be a teacher.  In fact, before I even began preschool, I told people I was going to be a teacher.  My parents instilled the power of education in me while growing up.  They also taught me the value in helping improve society in some way.  My dad was in law enforcement and was a politician, while my mom was a lifelong educator.  Both were highly involved with my education and supported all of my academic endeavors.

I had an excellent schooling experience that set the foundation for my learning.  Later on in college, here at Adams State, I found a deep passion for learning.  My undergraduate experience was outstanding.  I had great peers, supportive professors, and the opportunity to discover what I am capable of accomplishing.  My experience prepared me well for graduate studies, where I kept refining my skills and earned my first master’s degree in United State history, also from Adams State.

Present

Being that I always wanted to be a teacher, I did not imagine that would take me on a path towards higher education.  However, with a few lucky breaks, I made my way into the academic arena.  I have really enjoyed my time in the classroom working with students discussing various topics, growing our knowledge, and advancing goals.  I try and create a supportive space for students to excel in my class, similar to what I experienced as an undergraduate student.

Even though I believed the best way to help students was by teaching, I had some opportunities come my way to help the institution improve.  I began conducting institutional research that identified issues impacting students.  That led to advancing into different administrative positions and participation in various university committees, as well as Academic Council and the President’s Cabinet.  What I realized in my administrative duties is that I enjoyed the work.  I was still helping students, but in a different way.  I also realized that if I wanted to be effective, I needed a solid foundation.  I boldly decided to return to graduate school, learning about educational leadership and higher education administration.  I developed a deep understanding of strategic leadership, student learning, identity development, and the history of higher ed.  I became particularly interested in first-generation students, first year programs, self-authorship, and student identity development.  These are the topics that make up the majority of my research and has afforded me to give several lectures and presentations at conferences and other academic settings.

Future

Currently, I am the Director of First Year Seminars at Adams State.  I lead a team of associated faculty that teach FYS courses.  It has been a great experience to work with a dedicated team of faculty who care about students and want to assist in making a successful transition into college for all students.

I am also fortunate to serve in capacities that allows me a seat at some important tables.  I represent my academic unit in Academic Council with other school directors and academic units.  I continue to serve in the President’s Cabinet as head of CFIC.  I am part of the Student Success Steering Committee, where I co-chair the Retention Councils.  I have been involved in several HIP areas to improve engagement and the student experience at Adams State.  In addition, I coordinate the Faculty Lecture Series and a member of the Student Learning Assessment Committee.

I enjoy the work I do and hope to continue serving in these capacities.  I find having one foot in teaching and the other foot in administration to be the right balance for my professional character and purpose.  I think it is awesome I am able to serve out my lifelong dreams of being an educator and privileged to work with students discover their interests and motivation while fulfilling their goals and purpose.
